The Moore's Building Fire -
The Moore's building, earlier known as The Eagle Hotel, was being used
as a dormitory for North Ga College when in the early winter of 1942
caught fire and was destroyed. At the time there was no fire truck and
the hose used to fight the fire was hauled on two trailers stored in the
city and once on scene was hooked directly to the hydrants. Fire
Departments from the cities of Gainesville and Cleveland also assisted
with the fire. Being before Hwy 60 was built, the only way to go from
Gainesville to Dahlonega was by means of Hwy 129 and Hwy 52 so there was
a bit a long response time. The building was replaced by a hardware
store in 1945 and a Ford Dealership in 1954. The spot currently houses
The General Store and Classics.
