Address Numbering

One of the greatest challenges while responding to an emergency can be locating the emergency it's self. While a house that is on fire may stand out and be easily seen, someone sitting in their living having a heart attack is not.  Many homes do not have proper address numbers visible from the street. Some have none and others have numbers that are to small to read or have been aged to the point of being unreadable.  Have a look yourself at your numbers the next time you come home. How easy are they to see as you are driving towards your driveway. If they are hard to see in nice weather, imagine how it is on a dark, foggy and rainy night. Now imagine someone in your house having a life threatening emergency on that same night.  Here are some tips on making your house easy to find.

  • Have both sides of your mailbox marked. Emergency personnel could be coming from either direction.
  • If your mailbox is not in front of your house, put numbers that are at least 4 inches high and do not blend with the color of your house on the structure. If you can not see the house from the road post them on a sign or post at the driveway entrance.
  • Reflective numbers always work better than non.
  • Encourage your neighbors to do the same. When addresses close to yours are seen, responders can start slowing down and start looking for yours.

For a small investment in a few numbers, you could ultimately save your or someone else's life or even your property from damage that happens in the additional time it takes for someone to turn around.
